Which hydrographic sub-basin should I choose?

The budgetary fund for fisheries in Wallonia provides grants to Federations for actions such as:

  • fish stocking to be carried out in watercourses;
  • actions to be undertaken in support of fishing activities in these watercourses (for example: improving access to riverbanks, promotional and awareness-raising activities aimed at young people in favour of fishing, etc.);
  • support for the operation of fishing federations.

Following the reform of fisheries legislation (*), the fishing federations were reorganised so that there is now only one federation per hydrographic sub-basin. The aim of this reorganisation is to enable better fisheries management in Wallonia. An action carried out at the scale of a hydrographic sub-basin is indeed more coherent and more effective than one carried out according to administrative boundaries that do not take watercourses into account at all.

From now on, grants will be distributed according to these hydrographic sub-basins, and no longer according to the Walloon provinces.

You are therefore requested to choose, at the time of purchasing your fishing permit, one of the 15 Walloon hydrographic sub-basins.

In principle, the angler’s choice should correspond to the hydrographic sub-basin in which they fish most often, since this choice will positively influence the financial support from the budgetary fund for fisheries in Wallonia allocated to fishing in that hydrographic sub-basin.

Your fishing permit remains, of course, valid for fishing in all hydrographic sub-basins.
